Katja Herbers was born in Germany to Vera Beths, a violinist and Werner Herbers, an oboist. When she was a child Herbers traveled with her mother in America for a tour with the chamber ensemble L'Archibudelli. The parents of both her father and mother got married again, with her mother marrying cellist Anner bylsma. She was introduced to the world of theater.
